When we watch professional athletes and artists, we see a perfectly curated performance enacted with a high level of skill and seemingly, no anxiety.
We don’t see all the hard work and dedication that goes into that one moment in the spotlight.
We don’t see the diligent ground work put into building a foundation and schedule which worked for that person. We don’t see their failures, their moments of frustration, nor their personal struggles.
We see one moment in the spotlight, under pressure, in which that person managed to shine above all others.
Why compare yourself to a standard for which you haven’t trained? Why compare your efforts to one who has put in the work to consistently improve themselves? Mark yourself against your own goals, curated for you, in exactly the position you are, in this exact moment. That way, you remain determined and not defeated. You remain inspired by what is possible, but not discouraged.
Project management is looking at where you currently are (your environment, your strengths, weaknesses, resources and impediments) and deciding what your end goal will be. Then, establishing clear goals with manageable tasks on a flexible schedule that will bring you to the result you want.
Flexibility is key. Resilience is key. Respect, kindness and compassion for yourself during this learning process is key.
What can you do for yourself, today, to build the tomorrow you envision?
“There is no comparison between that which is lost by not succeeding and that which is lost by not trying.”
– Francis Bacon
